Textseminarium: Settler colonial articulations
This essay explores settler colonialism in political movements of white Swedish settlers in Jämtland and Härjedalen, e.g on South Saami land.
Drawing on ethnographic material, the findings show that a discourse of settler colonialism constructs the movements’ narratives, and thus governs relations in political practices. They use discourse that is built on elements that promote non-indigenous landowners as true colonised subjects through invoking heteropatriarchy and white possession. Making explicit the elements of the colonial imaginary of these political movements and how it constructs (settler) subjectivity is important for promoting stories beyond Swedish exceptionalism and the colonial status quo.
