Meeting the Demands of future wireless communication: Evolution of Multiple Access Techniques for 5G/6G Networks

Next–generation networks require effective multiple access (MA) techniques to handle the rapid growth of mobile data. Currently, MA can be categorized into orthogonal and non-orthogonal transmission strategies. Orthogonal strategies like FDMA, TDMA, CDMA, and OFDMA have been employed in practical wireless systems, where users are assigned separate resource blocks. However, the demand for more efficient and flexible MA approaches in 5G/6G networks necessitates the exploration of alternatives. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) have been proposed and implemented in 5G to address these requirements. The question remains whether NOMA or RSMA can meet the future wireless communication demand. Research predicts a substantial increase in the number of connected wireless devices, reaching 29.3 billion with diverse requirements. Developing a sophisticated MA technique, known as next-generation multiple access (NGMA), is crucial to achieving this goal. Consequently, the challenge lies in transitioning from NOMA/RSMA to NGMA, which remains an open problem. Our objective is to design an NGMA solution that fulfills the requirements of 6G networks.
