Analysis of Growth Rings (1)
The growth rings of trees can be analysed by use of the computer program WinDENDRO. In the tree sample below, the contrast between earlywood (light wood) and latewood (dark wood) is clearly visible. The contrast line between the years also shows the direction from the middle of the tree out towards its bark.
The latewood growth rings of different years vary in size, clarity and thickness.
Extreme climate factors create extreme ring patterns. The image to the right shows how the forest fire-stricken year of 2018 was marked by drought. Less precipitation makes for poorer nutrient uptake and, consequently, weaker growth and relatively thin tree rings.
