Pushing the Boundaries of Semantic Communication

At Mid Sweden University, Muhammad is working on innovative applications of artificial intelligence in wireless communications. Specifically, he is researching Semantic Communication that is an approach that focuses on transmitting only the most meaningful information from a dataset, rather than sending the entire dataset. This method has the potential to significantly enhance the efficiency and speed of next-generation wireless networks, including 6G.

- I’m working on Swin Transformers, pre-trained models introduced by Microsoft. These models enhance data processing quality, particularly for high-resolution images and videos, says Muhammad.

Muhammads work is included to the ENSURSE 6G project that is a collaboration between the University of Oulu and Mid Sweden University.

An International and Collaborative Experience

During his visit in Sweden, Muhammad is part of a diverse research group at the STC Research Center, which includes PhD-students, postdoctoral researchers, and supervisors with a background from various countries. This collaborative environment has enriched his experience, allowing him to learn from experts in both mathematical modeling and telecommunication systems.

- I really appreciate the open and collaborative culture at Mid Sweden University. In other places, different research groups are often isolated from each other, but here, everyone interacts. We discuss ideas during coffee breaks, which has been very beneficial for my research, tells Muhammad.

Beyond the academic setting, Muhammad has also enjoyed exploring Sweden’s natural beauty. He has visited locations such as Södra Berget, Norra Berget, and the lake Sidsjön. Despite the colder climate, compared to Italy, he finds Sweden well-organized and easy to adapt to.

- Even in heavy snowfall, everything is well managed, he noted.

A Future in Research

Looking ahead, Muhammad plans to pursue a PhD and continue his career in research, whether in academia or industry. His expertise in artificial intelligence enables him to explore multiple domains. At a university in Italy, he collaborated on AI-driven medical diagnostics, such as automated medical reporting for X-ray analysis - an area that aligns with some of the AI research conducted at Mid Sweden University. In the future, Muhammad aims to explore AI applications in telecommunications, further broadening the scope of his research.

Muhammad encourages other students to consider Erasmus traineeships at Mid Sweden University.

- I would definitely recommend it. It’s a great place for learning and innovation. And Mid Sweden University is a welcoming research environment and strong international collaborations, say Muhammad.
