Mid Sweden University's mathematics researchers start collaboration with Brazil
For three weeks, mathematics researchers Andreas Lind, associate professor and deputy head of department, and professor Aurélio Menegon from Mid Sweden University have visited Brazil to initiate a joint project and investigate the conditions for student exchange.
In 2023, mathematics research at Mid Sweden University received funding from the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education and Research, so-called STINT funds, to start a new international collaboration with the two Brazilian universities University of Sâo Paulo (USP) and Federal University of Espirito Santo (UFES). During the spring semester, the two Brazilian researchers Raimundo Araújo dos Santos from USP and Maico Ribeiro from UFES, visited Mid Sweden University, and now mathematics researchers Andreas Lind and Aurélio Menegon have visited USP and UFES. During the visit to Brazil, both Andreas and Aurélio held research seminars at their respective universities. During the visit, they also planned how the joint research project will proceed.
Discussed cooperation agreement
At USP, Andreas Lind and Aurélio Menegon also met with the department for international collaborations. The first discussions to sign a cooperation agreement between MIUN and USP have begun, where students at master's and doctoral level in particular will be able to visit the other university for a longer period of time. At UFES, no formal discussions have been initiated, but most students have expressed a desire to have the opportunity to come to Mid Sweden University in the future, so discussions about a cooperation agreement with UFES will also be initiated.
"This research collaboration and the collaboration with the respective Brazilian universities will be beneficial for Mid Sweden University. USP is the best university in Brazil and has world-class students. Starting a collaboration with them is a real pleasure. UFES is a smaller university with great ambitions. We also see good conditions for creating good cooperation here. There is already a good chance that one of the researchers will come to our university as a visiting researcher for a year," says Andreas Lind.
