Book lectures for your students
Do you want to give your students an opportunity to improve their academic skills? Book them a lecture on academic writing, information retrieval, or reference management!
Information Retrieval and Reference Management
The University Library offers instruction in information retrieval and reference management at both basic and advanced levels. As a teacher, you can work together with the teaching librarian to tailor a session for your students. We work with individual courses as well as progression plans for programmes where instruction in information retrieval and reference management is a recurring element.
Please note that students should have an assignment involving information retrieval or reference management in conjunction with the library’s instruction. This makes the teaching more relevant for the students. Depending on the content and the students' level, a session usually takes about 2-3 hours. The sessions often include various workshop elements where the students work independently on their assignments.
We offer instruction in the following topics:
- Library introduction, including the library's website and services, searching in Miun Discovery, etc.
- Basic database searches
- Advanced database searches
- Search methods and search tools
- Reference management
- Critical evaluation
- Scientific publishing and publication types

Academic Writing
In addition to individual tutoring for students, the University Library also offers course modules focused on academic writing as a complement to information retrieval instruction. The information is not discipline-specific and is suitable for both individual courses and programs. For example, we can offer progressive instruction in three sessions of two hours each at course levels A, B, and C.
Presentation sessions focus on the following:
- What is academic writing?
- The goal of an essay
- The IMRaD model
- The writing process
- Common writing errors
- Transitional markers
- Headings, paragraphs, and topic sentences
- References
- Quotations, evidence, and citation
- The first draft
- Editing
- Final proofreading
