International student sports conference to Östersund
In August 2026, Mid Sweden University will host the FISU World Forum, a major international student sports conference, for the first time. The conference is expected to be attended by around 200 participants from more than 40 countries.
"It is of course very gratifying that we have been entrusted with arranging the next FISU World Forum. It is one of many important pieces of the puzzle in our long-term work to strengthen student health and student sports at Mid Sweden University and share the research and knowledge we have in areas such as sports and health," says Anders Fällström. Vice-Chancellor of Mid Sweden University.
FISU World Forum is an international student sports conference that is arranged every two years and has an itinerant host. At the end of August, representatives of Mid Sweden University, Östersund Municipality and SAIF (Swedish Academic Sports Confederation) participated at this year's FISU World Forum in Zagreb to take part in experiences from this year's organizer and receive the FISU flag at the closing ceremony as the next Forum organizer.
"We already know that the issue of dual careers, i.e. preparing elite athletes for a civilian career through studies at university, will be a requested topic for the conference. Here we are in Sweden and at Mid Sweden University far ahead in development," says Agnes Wredenberg, Operations Manager for Mid Sweden University's Sports Academy.
Participants from about 45 countries from all over the world and about 200 participants are expected to come to the conference, which lasts for five days. Among the participants are students and employees of national student sports federations as well as representatives of FISU (International University Sports Federation). In addition to an extensive conference program with lecturers and workshops, the conference includes sports and cultural activities.
"Being able to welcome students from all corners of the world here to Östersund and Jämtland creates so many opportunities for the future. We are an experienced event municipality where sports and studies should be able to go hand in hand. A warm welcome to FISU World Forum 2026, we promise you a world-class experience, says Rosi Hoffer, (S) Municipal Commissioner, Östersund Municipality.
"We see the fact that the FISU World Forum will be held in Östersund, Sweden, in 2026, as a great opportunity for knowledge exchange. Mid Sweden University is at the forefront with its research on sports and health, Östersund as a region has a lot of fun going on that we can share with both Swedish and international students and with experience from this year's FISU World Forum in Zagreb, student sports in Sweden will grow with the help of the great international experience shared at the conference, says Anette Löhnn, Secretary General of the Swedish Academic Sports Confederation, SAIF.
FISU World Forum 2026 is organized by Mid Sweden University, SAIF, Östersund Municipality, Region Jämtland Härjedalen and FISU.
