Aim

The aim of this course is to carry out an extensive, in-depth documentary project within the photojournalistic field. The end result is a publishable project accompanied by a text placing the visual work in context. Each student is to carry out the project according to a project plan developed, and approved, in the course Master Thesis Proposal.

Course objectives

After completion of this course, the student is expected to be able to:
- independently develop and execute original idea from a photojournalistic perspective, and competently be able to collect quality materials during the field work
- independently evaluate what is practically, economically and time-wise realistic in order to carry out a project
- with the collected materials as a point of departure, put together a high-quality project in image and text formats
- present and analyze the work in its final format, in writing and orally

Content

The course addresses:
- Planning, research
- Independent, practical field work
- Selection and editing of the materials
- Writing of text accompanying the project
- Presentation and analysis of the material
- Readings and review of annotated bibliography
- Final review of thesis proposal

Photojournalism MA, Thesis Proposal, 7.5 Credits.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Instruction is carried out through independent fieldwork, workshops, individual advising before, during and after the fieldwork, as well as group advising and seminars on campus. The course meets during 20 weeks; a large part of the course consists of independent work.

The course is taught in English.

Examination form

The course is examined through a final, seminar-form examination and image analysis.

Attendance is required at all seminars and advising sessions, and at all examination days. Absences and late assignments may have a negative effect on the course grade.

The requirement is for a final selection of images in a cohesive and publishable photographic project accompanied by relevant texts placing the visual project in context.”

A great emphasis is placed on the student’s ability to express an idea through a visual narrative communicated through a highly developed and personal visual language. Furthermore, a great emphasis is placed on all the steps through the production process.

Grading system

Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

Other information

Course meetings and exercises may take place during evenings and weekends. Any expenses for trips, materials and technical equipment are borne by the student.

Plagiarism is not permitted and will be reported to the Chancellor’s office.
