Aim

The purpose of the course is for the student to develop the ability to formulate researchable problems and plan a research or development project in computer engineering. The course also focuses on strengthening scientific thinking, method selection, self-reflection, and the ability to present and defend research ideas.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • Analyze a subject area and identify research gaps with the support of scientific literature
  • Formulate a well-defined and researchable problem statement, and define the purpose and objectives
  • Select and justify appropriate methods and techniques to investigate the problem
  • Develop a realistic and feasible project plan including a timeline, risk assessment, and work tasks
  • Conduct an initial literature review with relevant theory and source criticism
  • Reflect on their own learning process, research ethics, and professional development
  • Orally present and defend their project proposal in a structured manner.

Content

The student shall systematically review literature in the chosen subject area and in dialogue with the supervisor formulate the purpose and goals of his / her project. The concept of planning contains a rough plan of which elements are to be included, including any broadening of competence that is not directly linked to the project.

The course contains for the most part elements of own analysis and systematic investigation of the research area. The course also addresses general issues around the research process, how to develop issues in research, techniques for designing research plans, and how to systematically work with literature.
