Aim

During this course, students will conduct an academic research project through the application of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods. The project will allow students to develop skills at master's (advanced) level in scientific method, analysis, writing, presentation and critical review of scientific work.

Course objectives

After completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate skills and competencies in the areas outlined below.


Knowledge and understanding:
  • Demonstrate a considerable degree of specialised knowledge in a specific topic within the subject of sports science, including methodological understanding and insight into current research and development work

Competence and skills:
  • Independently and systematically formulate clear and substantive research questions
  • Demonstrate the skills required to conduct rigorous scientific research
  • Demonstrate the ability, both in speech and writing, to clearly report and discuss conclusions and the knowledge and arguments upon which they are based

Judgement and approach:
  • Discuss principles of research ethics and apply ethical considerations to research practices
  • Demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of research in the field of sports science, and how it can or should be applied
  • Reflect upon the need for further knowledge and take responsibility for their ongoing learning

Content

The course constitutes a 30 credit independent project. A large proportion of students’ time should be spent on independent planning and execution of the project, including background reading, study design, data collection, data analysis, and write up. Students will receive support from a project supervisor in this process.


The opportunity to collect data from human participants in countries other than Sweden is granted at the discretion of the course director, after ethical considerations and consideration of relevant legislation and other logistical factors*.*

Entry requirements

A Bachelor degree with at least 180 credits, including a degree project of at least 15 credits, in Sports Science, Sports Medicine or Physiotherapy.



OR



A Bachelor degree consisting of at least 180 credits, including a degree project of at least 15 credits, and a minimum of 60 credits in one or more of the following subjects: clinical epidemiology, exercise physiology, testing methods in sports science, kinesiology, biomechanics, coaching and leadership, sports nutrition, sports medicine, training sciences.



AND English course 6 or equivalent.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

The course is delivered in English. Teaching will take place predominantly through individual and/or group supervision, with the possibility for occasional online lectures and/or seminars to support student’s skill development. The project work can take place remotely and/or using laboratory facilities at the campus in Östersund.

1101: Master Thesis, 30 Credits
Grade scale: Three-grade scale
Master’s thesis.

2101: Presentation/Opposition
Grade scale: Two-grade scale
Oral presentation.

The course is examined through two compulsory modules:

1. Submission of a written Master Thesis

2. Presentation of the submitted Master Thesis and opposition of another student’s Thesis in a group seminar.
