Aim

The aim of the course is for students to see the possibilities of using geographical information in the form of digital maps and other location-based data to analyse environment-related problems. Furthermore, the course aims to inspire further studies in geographical environmental analysis.

Course objectives

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. manage and process geographical information from different sources and in different formats in GIS,
  2. present complex geographical information in a pedagogical way in the form of maps that can be used in, for example, publications,
  3. design and with adequate methods carry out a study on an environmental problem, based on spatial analysis, and
  4. review other students' scientific work and suggest improvements.

Content

The course focuses on practical applications of GIS. Various problems that can be studied and analysed using spatial data will be the starting point for identifying and developing solutions. The geographical examples used in the course are mainly from environmental science. Using GIS, students will study how problems can be analysed, presented and what possible solutions may exist.

The course uses open source software and student-owned hardware, so all knowledge and software skills will be directly available to the student in any work or learning situation, even after the course.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

The theoretical knowledge transfer will partly take place through recorded lectures. After each lecture, a quiz will be answered. Each recorded lecture or set of tasks will be followed by a question and answer session to ensure that all questions are clear and that all students are at the right level. In addition, a discussion round will be conducted after each block within the course where problem solving strategies are discussed.

Teaching will be given in English.
