Aim
The goal of the course is to provide an introduction in the ability to independently evaluate and conduct a quantitative research project.
Course objectives
After completing the course the student will be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
• Understand and explain various quantitative study designs and to compare and evaluate its uses
Skills and abilities
• Choose and use an adequate quantitative study design for his/her own research aim and data
Values and attitudes
• Critically reflect on research ethical issues in various quantitative study designs
• Evaluate threats to validity and reliability in different quantitative study designs
• Critically evaluate the weaknesses and strengths of his/her study
Content
The course aims to provide an introduction in advanced training for quantitative research methods by deepening in quantitative study designs necessary to execute and interpret. The focus will be on experimental studies, such as randomized control trials (RCT) and quasi-experimental studies, but the key elements of correlational approaches will also be discussed.

A person meets the entry requirements for the course if he or she has been admitted to a third-cycle study programme and will be given credit for the course in that study programme.

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
Teaching form
Compulsory attendance
There will be four days workshops. Additionally, one study assignment seminar and one examination seminar.
The course consists of workshops where the theory is interspersed with group discussions and seminars. With support from literature and teachers the student will apply one quantitative analysis in her/his own research and reflect upon the application in an independent and critical way.
Examination form
Individual assignment. The examination outline is based on the students’ focus on their own research work. Further information is to be found in the description of examination.
