Psychology MA, Emotion in a Social and Cultural Perspective, 7.5 credits

Aim

The aim of the course is to provide a deeper understanding social and cultural underpinnings of emotion as well as emotional implications for social and cultural phenomena, with reference to the individual, the group and the society.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the student is supposed to be able to:

Knowledge and understanding
- Describe social psychological and culture theoretical perspectives on emotion.
- Describe relevant research in the area.

Skills and abilities
- Provide a deeper reasoning about social and cultural influences on emotions, as well as about emotional aspects of social and cultural phenomena.
- Apply relevant theories and contemporary research in the emotional field on sociocultural phenomena in society by formulating a research problem with corresponding hypotheses and suggesting a research design for that purpose.

Judgement and approach
- Compare and critically evaluate the validity of the body of knowledge within the field, and its contribution to the understanding of interindividual and intergroup phenomena.
- Reason about ethical perspectives regarding applicability of sociocultural aspects on emotions.

Content

The course presents social psychological theories and perspectives on the relation between emotion and sociocultural phenomena. Understanding of contemporary interindividual, intergroup and societal issues will be emphasized. Moreover, evaluation of research results within the field will be focused upon, as well as the research methods used within the field.

Entry requirements

A bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits (ECTS) with a major in psychology. Alternatively, a bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits (ECTS) with a different major and 60 credits in psychology. Alternatively, 180 credits (ECTS) in psychology without the requirement of having a completed degree. English B/English 6 from Swedish gymnasium or equivalent.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

The course is a distance learning course with a limited number of compulsory meetings on campus in Östersund, Sweden. Participation via distance communication means is compulsory throughout the course. Students are required to be active in the course’s room in the online learning platform. The platform is the primary communication tool used for students and teachers, and students will find all information needed to complete the course in the course room.

2101: Take-home Examination, 2.5 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

2102: Seminar Assignment, 2.5 Credits
Grade scale: Fail (U) or Pass (G)

2103: Project Work, 2.5 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
Within this module, active participation in seminars is also included.
