Summary

Biathlon combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, while skiing, the biathlete carries the rifle on his/her back (minimum 3.5 kg). In my thesis, I have investigated how the rifle affects skiing both from a physiological and biomechanical perspective in biathlon, through roller skiing in a laboratory environment and skiing on snow in the field.

The results in this thesis show that wearing the rifle impairs performance, increases the respiratory response during submaximal work and affects the movement pattern in the upper body and the choice of part technique compared to skiing without a rifle.

This thesis increases our knowledge about the impact of the rifle on the skiing in biathlon, which can be important for the development of the sport-specific training and, by extension, the performance in biathlon.
