LEADING SUSTAINABLE LIVING SYSTEMS: How Can We Understand Attractive Quality to Cultivate a Culture of Responsive Leadership in Schools?

Quality in schooling and education is in crisis in the United States. Some believe there is a need for a new paradigm concerning the culture of leadership of schools which must have deeper meaning and purpose if quality in education is to become more sustainable. One possibility is to reframe and rethink schools as living systems rather than the traditional bureaucratic leadership models that have existed since World War II. This includes lessons offered by the concept of attractive quality and the phenomenon of responsiveness.

The purpose of the first half of this thesis is to explore, examine and describe the phenomena of responsive leadership and attractive quality as two contributive lenses to understand how to lead schools as living systems. It is hoped that this will contribute to the development of knowledge and understanding of how to cultivate a culture of responsive leadership to sustain quality in education, and more specifically, how this concept might be helpful to leaders to understand how to view their schools as living systems.
