STC invests heavily with 16 new doctoral students | 2023 |
The STC research centre is investing heavily in research in AI and the Internet of Things and is now hiring 16 new doctoral students. The initiative is made possible through the new international graduate school IRS TransTech, the regional fund project DIGIT and internal resources.
"We are now making a major investment and recruiting 16 new doctoral students. The new doctoral students will be linked to both companies and international universities, which will contribute to the development of our research environment," says Mattias O'Nils, head of the STC research centre.
Four of the new doctoral students will be so-called industrial doctoral students and will share their positions between the research environment at Mid Sweden University and the company where they are employed. This means that they will carry out their doctoral studies on challenges linked to sustainable digital development that the company is facing. This is made possible through the new regional fund project DIGIT – Sustainable Digital Transformation.
Other doctoral students are part of the international graduate school IRS TransTech as well as internal initiatives. The PhD students at STC within IRS TransTech will carry out parts of their doctoral studies at international universities such as the Technical Universities of Vienna, Chemnitz, Ostwestfalen-Lippe and Zurich as well as the Italian Universities of Salerno and L'Aquila. This means that the doctoral students will receive a double degree from two universities after completing their studies.
"International exchange and networking are important for the development of research at STC, but also for improving the region's long-term skills supply," continues Mattias O'Nils.
The focus of the PhD students in the IRS TransTech and DIGIT graduate school will be research in the STC research center's areas of activity such as Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and sensor development.
The International Research School in Transformative Technologies (IRS TransTech) is a five-year project funded by the Knowledge Foundation. The initiative is the first within the Knowledge Foundation's targeted investment in Strategic Environments, where the research environment Transformative Technology at Mid Sweden University is the only one of its kind.
DIGIT - Sustainable Digital Transformation, is funded with support from the European Regional Development Fund, ERDF and is a collaboration between Mid Sweden University, Bron Innovation, Samling Näringsliv, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Hallströms Verkstäder, Starbit, Media Research. In addition to this, there is also collaboration with another 20 or so businesses and municipal collaborations.
