The Student Union Membership No Longer Mandatory | 2010 |
As early as in the year 1667, membership in what was then known as the students’ nations was made mandatory, to make it possible to keep track of and supervise the students. This inspired the decision in 1908 to make all student union memberships mandatory.
When the Student union membership ceased being mandatory four years ago, it raised a number of questions. What would it be like to break such a long tradition? Would the students still choose to become members of the union? But like in the case of most changes, in the end, it usually turns out well – although slightly different.
– I think it’s better that the union membership is voluntary. And it’s actually more fun to work now, since the students who come here have chosen for themselves to become members, says Student union in Sundsvall.
