The Opening of a Centralized Campus in Östersund | 2002 |
The university’s premises on Rådhusgatan in Östersund were too small even in the 1980s, which led to the rental of additional premises in town and on Frösön. Staff and student longed for the University’s activities in Östersund to be centralized in a single location.
In the beginning of the 1990s, different proposals for a unified solution were examined. Then, a couple of events occurred that altered the conditions: the county council decided to vacate the hospital buildings on Frösön and the Swedish Parliament decided to disband the Norrland Artillery Regiment A4. Many people worked to have the activities moved into the hospital buildings and others worked just as hard for the central localization that A4 would mean. The outcome was uncertain, until in 1997, when the University Board decided that the location would be the A4-area.
The opening was held on 6 September 2002 and the final moving in took place six months later. The campus area also houses around 70 companies, organizations and public authorities, which offers good opportunities for collaboration. The students gain a proximity to commercial and industrial life, and future work places.
