Mandatory update to Windows 11

Wed 05 Feb 2025 13:33

In October, Microsoft will end its support for the Windows 10 operating system. This means that all users at Mid Sweden University must upgrade their computers to Windows 11 before then. The upgrade is mandatory.

When Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, no more security updates will be released. This means a significantly increased risk of security incidents and vulnerabilities that can affect our systems and data. It is important to note that this upgrade is not voluntary, but necessary.

Recommended time for upgrade

To avoid stress and possible interruptions, we recommend that you complete the upgrade as soon as possible.

You can complete the upgrade through Microsoft's Software Center. Here are some helpful resources:

Back up your files

Before you begin the upgrade, we recommend that you back up all important files. While the upgrade doesn't normally affect your locally saved files on your desktop, we recommend that you play it safe.

You can use the following options:

• Mid Sweden University's file areas (H- and M-disks)
• OneDrive
• The research data vault (contact the data access unit, DAU, for support: nilex.dau@miun.se)

Think about which storage areas will be used for different types of information:

Notebooks in OneNote

If you're using OneNote, we recommend syncing your notebooks just in case before upgrading to Windows 11.

Optional upgrade

This process is now underway through the Software Center. You have the option to upgrade yourself until September 2025. The advantage of this is that you can choose the time of the upgrade. Expect the installation to take longer. During this time, the computer cannot be used for anything else.

Scheduled upgrade

If you don't upgrade yourself, Infra will schedule this for you. The planned upgrade will take place during the autumn, weeks 38–40. Note that this will be a forced upgrade, which means you can't influence when this happens. We strongly recommend that you complete the upgrade yourself before September 2025.
