Internationalisation grants for doctoral students at the Faculty of Human Sciences
The Faculty of Human Sciences has allocated two Internationalisation Grants of SEK 70,000 each for doctoral students intended for international visits to another country. Apply by 11 May.
The purpose of the grant is to promote the internationalisation of doctoral students. The main purpose is to strengthen and advance the thesis work and the third-cycle education as well as benefit the long-term contact- and network building. Minor teaching assignments may be included during the planned visit but should not constitute the main purpose.
The grant is awarded to doctoral students to cover extra costs in connection with visits outside Sweden. The grant, which can only be awarded once during the third-cycle education, can be used for travel costs, accommodation costs, course fees, etc. A suitable time for the visit is when the doctoral student has made a research study progression and underway with the doctoral studies but still has time left to assimilate new research ideas. The grant can, for example, support personal development, in-depth knowledge of the subject, insight into other research environments or specific knowledge and skills.
The conditions for receiving the grant are as follows:
- Applicants must be admitted to third-cycle education and/or be employed as a doctoral student at the Faculty of Human Sciences at Mid Sweden University and be active in their third-cycle education.
- The grant can be awarded when the applicant has made a good start with their third-cycle studies and can be used no later than in connection to the internal final seminar.
- The grant is to be used for third-cycle studies outside of Sweden.
- Applicants who received the same grant earlier can not apply for a second time.
- A report back to the Council for Third-Cycle Education at the Faculty of Human Sciences must be made via a short memo immediately after returning from the visit abroad. Further instructions on what the memo should contain will be available when the decision is announced.
Application
The application must contain the following information:
- Purpose of the visit and implementation plan in relation to the applicant's third-cycle studies and the development of the own subject.
- Location/department of the stay and a documented invitation (from Head of Department or equivalent authority) stating the planned length of stay and activities.
- A general cost calculation including travel, accommodation, subsistence allowance (if applicable) and course fee, if any, and any other expenses.
- How MIUN's sustainability and travel policy should be followed and that sustainable travel choices should be pursued.
- A certificate from the applicant's main supervisor supporting the application.
Application period 24 March – 11 May 2025
The application, which shall not consist of more than two pages (excluding certificate, invitation and calculation), must be sent by 11 May 2025, at the latest, to Sara Häggström, sara.haggstrom@miun.se, administrative office at the Faculty of Human Sciences at Mid Sweden University.
Mark the application "Internationalisation grants for doctoral students 2025".
Assessment and decision
Applications are assessed by the Council for Third-Cycle Education’s assessment group. Applications are assessed based on the following criteria and will be ranked based on how well they meet these:
- Clear plan for the implementation of the visit and a well-justified purpose with a description of the work during the specified period of the stay
- A clear description of how the visit promotes the doctoral student’s third-cycle education and how the timing of the visit fits into the education and a future career.
- Clear and reasonable cost calculations
- Description of how the visit contributes to the development of the subject, where the doctoral student is registered.
Only complete applications will be assessed. The assessment group will rank the applications that can be granted and provide a justification. The decision is made by the Council for Third-Cycle Education at the Faculty of Human Sciences at their meeting in June or August. When the council has taken a decision, this will be informed to the applicants, by the faculty, as well as information about what the memo should contain.
The doctoral student gets access to the grant through a special accounting number to record costs up to SEK 70,000. Mid Sweden University’s procured travel agency and debit cards should be primarily used, but there is also the possibility of travel advances or use an expense report.
The grant must be used within two years of the decision and within the framework of the third-cycle education. If the grant cannot be used according to the application, the doctoral student should contact the Faculty Office, Sara Häggström, sara.haggstrom@miun.se.
