Sundsvall's new union building is inaugurated

As of today, Sundsvall's students not only have their own student pub, but today the union building's new study area was also inaugurated. The space is the same as the pub, but offers the opportunity for students to study together during the day.

"We want to contribute to a vibrant campus, where students don't just sit at home," says Fabian Grönvik, chairman of the Fire Brigade's board.

The opening ceremony

The inauguration consisted of speeches by the president Sundsvall's student union (SKS) Anitra Gudmarsdotter, Fabian Grönvik, Vice-Chancellor Anders Fällström and Lisa Tynnemark, Vice Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board. After all the speeches, the building was blessed by the university chaplain before the ribbon was cut and the Fire Brigade offered visitors canapés and bubbly before the Open House that started.

Fire brigade operations

During the Fire Brigade's open house, Fabian got to tell a little more about the business that he chairs. What he wants to highlight above all today is precisely the benefit that the union building does in the form of a study surface.

"It's our own place, which can also complement LearningSpace where the future is uncertain.

Fabian Grönvik hopes that the new union building will feel welcoming to all students. 
"Among other things, we offer microwave ovens so students can study and eat their lunch here instead of sitting at home," he says.

The study area will be open to all Mid Sweden University students in Sundsvall. From today, Mid Sweden University's blips will provide access to the premises during the opening hours that apply. However, the pub is more limited, as the serving license requires that only members of SKS have access during these times. On the other hand, Vice-Chancellor Anders Fällström hopes that there will be pub occasions where employees can also make contacts with the students, but there were no guarantees.

The Sexmästeriet

The Fire Brigade's board also includes a committee called Sexmästeri, Brandsex. Tobias Dellemyr is one of the three people responsible there.

"Brandsex is the Fire Brigade House's event committee. Our main task is to plan events during regular opening hours, and sometimes even extra events on Saturdays," Tobias explains. Brandsex will focus on small events such as sewing circles and regular union evenings, but also larger events such as sittings according to the venue's capacity of 95 people.

Are you wondering why it's called a sexmästeri? Sexmästeri is one of many traditional terms for a party association in the Swedish university and college world. Other terms used are club master, club work and party master. The origin is the same as in the swedish word for bachelor party and is about partying.
