Fear of speech
Fear of speech is common among students. The fear of speaking can, for example, mean that you experience discomfort and nervousness before a presentation or when you have to speak in front of a group.
If you feel that fear is hindering you in your studies and want to learn how to reduce your anxiety, you can turn to the Student Health Care. With us, you can get tips and strategies by participating in one of our dare-speak courses or listening to one of our lectures.
The fear of speaking usually decreases when you practice and expose yourself to the situation, and if you don't feel quite ready for this, you can also book a one-on-one conversation.
How to deal with nervousness• Learn the material you’re going to present; if you’re well-prepared and knowledgeable, the risk of getting nervous if you lose your place decreases.
• Practice, practice, and practice—read the text aloud to yourself; this way, you’ll get used to hearing your own voice. Then try practicing in front of a mirror, a friend, or a family member.
• Expose yourself to the fear in small doses. Start by presenting to a smaller group or by raising your hand to ask a question.
• When feelings of nervousness aries, acknowledge and describe them to yourself - where do you feel them? This can help release some of the pressure. And remember, you are not going to die, try breathing slowly and calmly to reduce the stress.
