"The students should feel that I am there for them"
To teach criminology is to be in his element for Gustav Grut. When Mid Sweden University offered a new bachelor's programme in criminology, many people applied, and for the students who are admitted, a motivated teacher awaits.
"I'm glad I remember what I thought was important in a teacher when I was a student. And what really stood out was if it was a teacher with a strong interest in the subject they taught.
Gustav has this strong interest, and it is also what he wants to convey to his students. The subject of criminology is in focus in the public debate and there are plenty of political discussions and opinions on the issue. This is one of the explanations why Gustav finds the teaching assignment so interesting. And important.
"We teachers focus on research on crime prevention, and then it is important to also give students knowledge about scientific methods and analytical tools. In this way, I believe that our students learn to reflect critically and to distinguish between results from high-quality research and biased opinions," he reasons.
Create opportunities for interaction
Lectures and seminars deal with everything from discussions about the causes of crime to ethical issues, and Gustav strives to ensure that there are plenty of opportunities for interaction. There will be better lessons, but also more fun for the students.
"It is important for knowledge to go in depth. But as a teacher, I can also do a lot to ensure that the students can be social so that it becomes a group with good cohesion," Gustav reasons.
In the same way, he also makes sure that the training is as practical as possible. At Campus in Östersund there is the unique simulation environment RCR Simulation Lab, where Gustav takes the students to test and experiment with how to create outdoor environments that prevent crime from happening.
"I think it's important to dare to experiment in teaching and give students the opportunity to practice and practice practical thinking," he says.
Contribute to a safe atmosphere
From his student days, Gustav has also taken with him how important he thought it was to have teachers who were available to the students and answered questions or contributed with clarity if anyone was unsure.
"I want it to be a safe atmosphere and that the students know what is expected of them. They should be able to book meetings with me and feel that I'm here for them," he says.
