Archives and Information Science
On a daily basis, a lot of information is produced in the form of text, sound and images. This requires that there is a good and structured way to store the information so that it is easily accessible and correct.
The archives of public authorities are also of great importance for democracy and our insight into what is happening within the organisation.
As the amount of information increases, we place increasing demands on it to be accessible and comprehensible. Effective archive and information management is therefore necessary in order to conduct a business in an orderly and responsible manner, but also to meet the legal requirements and ensure that information does not disappear over time.
Mid Sweden University has conducted education and research in archival and information science since the late 1980s. As the only university with a focus on archives, we provide you with knowledge of archival information and the origin, management, organisation and use of archives, as well as its impact and significance for organisations, individuals and society. Among other things, you get to use your strategic and analytical thinking to study how organizations can become better at storing important information in an efficient way.
After completing your studies, you can work as an archivist or archive strategist with qualified document and archive management issues at government agencies, companies or archive institutions.
The courses at the undergraduate level can advantageously be included in a bachelor's degree. The courses at the advanced level are part of the Master's Programme in Sustainable Information Management, where Archives and Information Science is one of three possible specialisations in the programme. The advanced level gives you the opportunity for in-depth study and is carried out with close links to the research conducted at Mid Sweden University. In research, you will develop various practical and sustainable archive solutions and work in our virtual lab. The courses are given remotely in the form of self-study and laboratory work via the internet combined with meetings at Campus Sundsvall two to four times per semester.
