Environmental Science
Development towards a sustainable society is a major challenge. Knowledge is needed about how ecological, social and technical systems interact. This provides stimulating and exciting perspectives to work with in the subject of environmental science.
Environmental science is about understanding the connections between how humans affect nature while being dependent on it. Issues related to sustainable development often concern many different areas at the same time. A systems approach is therefore important for environmental science, as is the ability to communicate with representatives of different activities and areas of knowledge in society. This means that knowledge of ecosystems and technical systems is integrated with knowledge of society's various functions and opportunities to navigate towards a sustainable society.
Sustainable development requires that natural resources are used without depleting them or jeopardising productive capacity in the long term. However, sustainable development also requires social and economic development, the promotion of human health and the fight against poverty. This without future generations suffering. Environmental science is thus also about identifying development strategies within the framework of the sustainable use of natural resources.
Due to its international character, environmental science provides good conditions for working with various international assignments. Most of our courses are largely taught in English.
Environmental science can be the main field of study in bachelor's, master's and master's degrees at Mid Sweden University.
Ecotechnology, 180 credits, and Eco-Entrepreneur for Sustainable Development, 180 credits, includes environmental science as the main field of study, and the subject is also included in the Eco-Engineering programme, 180 credits. The International Master's Programme in Ecotechnology and Sustainable Development, 120 credits, mainly includes courses in environmental science and environmental engineering. The programme is aimed at both foreign and Swedish students. Courses in environmental science are given at Mid Sweden University's Campus Östersund and at a distance. At Mid Sweden University, environmental science is represented by the professorship in ecotechnology.
