Literature
Stories of various kinds have always been an important and enriching part of life in all times and in all cultures. Through storytelling, people have captured moments that have passed, breathed life into great emotions and processed subversive conflicts in both external and internal reality.
In literary studies, we study these texts, from the ancient Ulysses to the contemporary phenomenon of Harry Potter. There is a strong focus on interpreting the texts and understanding them based on their context. The subject also includes creative writing.
The three-year Bachelor's Programme in Literature and Writing combines creative writing with comparative literature. The basic idea is that the different competencies fertilize each other; You become better as a writer by having literary expertise, and better as a literary scholar by the experience of writing fiction. But the programme also provides a broader approach to the possibilities of writing and reading. Those who have completed the programme will be able to analyse, interpret, write and formulate themselves scientifically, literarily, journalistically and in popular science. It will thus have acquired a competence that opens doors to qualified jobs with texts of various kinds in many different areas. Potential employers can be found in the public sector, but also in private organizations with a need for specialized and at the same time for text skills. The programme provides a foundation for further studies at the advanced level and then the doctoral level.
The courses at A and B level are focused on developing the ability to analyse and interpret literary texts in the three main genres of narrative, drama and poetry, to provide orientation in literary theory and method, and to provide knowledge of literary history. The bibliography includes both theoretical and literary historical works and a large number of literary works from Homer to the present day. The B-course also includes a minor essay. The C-course at the undergraduate level includes a theoretical in-depth study, but first and foremost an essay course where your own research and writing are at the center. The subject also provides individual courses in areas such as children's and young adult literature and science fiction.
Undergraduate courses A-C in Comparative Literature can be the main field of study in a Bachelor's degree, but Comparative Literature can also be the main field of study in a Master's degree. At the master's level, the intermediate studies are dominated by independent research work in which the theoretical and methodological knowledge is consolidated and where the results are presented in the form of a scientific paper/independent project.
Creative writing is an alternative form of literary studies at the undergraduate level that focuses more directly on the aesthetics of literary writing, with a strong emphasis on one's own text production in various literary genres. The bibliography mainly contains works from our own time. In the B and C courses, the students also work on larger, coherent works of their own. Creative writing cannot be the main field of study in a bachelor's degree.
The courses provide literary knowledge and text analysis skills that are useful in a number of areas: in journalism and in the media industry in general, in the school world and in the library system and in the publishing industry, to name just a few areas. A master's degree qualifies you for doctoral studies in comparative literature.
