Sports Science
Sports science as a subject spans a broad field of knowledge that includes human physiological and psychological functions and how these functions affect sports performance, health and well-being.
Education in anatomy and physiology aims to provide an increased understanding of how to train for better health and/or improved performance. It is also of great importance to have knowledge of reliable measurement methods and how they should be interpreted to help the athlete or exerciser further in their training.
Exercise, regardless of level, requires a well-balanced diet for continued good health and successful athletic performance. Knowledge of this is gained through in-depth knowledge of nutrition.
Kinesiology makes it possible to calculate the most effective and the least harmful movement pattern in a given situation, which is an important component to be able to design an exercise program regardless of the individual. In this regard, knowledge of exercise science is also needed, i.e. the study of how we train most effectively through a good balance between training, rest and diet.
All of the mentioned areas play a major role in the training and coaching of individuals to increased health and increased performance. In order for people to continuously engage in exercise and training, sports psychology conditions are also required. Sports science as a subject is composed of all these parts with a focus on physical activity and health as well as performance sports. This is to be able to provide an overall picture of the conditions that set the framework for human exercise and sports in all forms.
At Mid Sweden University, courses in sports science are linked to the research conducted in health sciences and at the Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre, where researchers collaborate on improved training and performance in performance sports as well as physical activity and health. Advanced basic research is combined with applied research with strong ties to the region's conditions, for example in winter sports and outdoor recreation. Education in sports science provides a broad foundation for qualified professional activities in sports activities and in health care.
