Swedish as a second language
Studying Swedish as a second language is useful in many different professions, both in the public and private sectors.
The courses place great emphasis on how a second language is learned and the situation of second language speakers in a new home country. Concepts such as culture, migration, ethnicity and identity are problematized and discussed, as well as factors that affect language learning.
The studies in Swedish as a second language at the undergraduate level, BA (A and B), give you an introduction to the different areas that are included in the field in question. Theories of, for example, second language acquisition and second language development are treated and the didactic perspective is highlighted to get a connection between theory and practice. This is reflected in the course literature, assignments and discussions in the classroom. Both subject-theoretical and subject-specific didactic elements are thus included in the courses.
Swedish as a second language includes eight courses of 7.5 credits each. Each of the courses has its own special focus, such as second language acquisition, the Swedish language from a cross-linguistic perspective, sociology of language and migration. The last course at B-level, Swedish as a Second Language B4, consists of an essay where you carry out a survey and present the results in written form. A major focus is on didactic elements as the courses in Swedish can be used for those who want to teach pupils with a mother tongue other than Swedish and apply for qualifications for it.
