Tourism Studies
Tourism encompasses the activities of people who travel to and stay in places outside their usual surroundings. Tourism Studies studies the conditions for this, deepens knowledge about companies and organizations in tourism and analyzes the effects of tourism on the destination.
Tourism Studies is a holistic field of study and research where physical, economic, social and cultural aspects interact. But tourism is not an isolated field of study. The functioning of the world around us and external events have proven to play a crucial role in the opportunities and conditions of tourism and the tourism industry. Therefore, it is important to be able to put tourism in a broader perspective, using knowledge from different social sciences. Tourism Studies is therefore an interdisciplinary scientific subject that has been developed at Mid Sweden University, where collaboration between different social science areas contributes to the development and content of the subject.
In many contexts, tourism is seen as part of the broader English concept of "leisure", which includes leisure and recreation. It is an area in which studies focus on people's behaviours and how their hobbies and recreational needs are met. Regardless of the type of tourism, there are demands for high quality in the way the tourism industry and destinations operate. What is offered must meet the expectations of tourists. It is therefore a question of making strategic choices in order to develop well-functioning tourism and a profitable tourism industry.
Mid Sweden University offers education in tourism studies at both undergraduate and advanced level as well as at doctoral level. Courses are offered at Mid Sweden University's campus in Östersund. Undergraduate education is mainly conducted within the Tourism and Destination Development programme, where Tourism Studies is an elective main field of study in the degree. Freestanding distance courses are also offered within the subject. Training in this field is a basis for qualified professional activity in all areas of the tourism sector.
