Chemistry
Chemistry is part of all the processes of life and everything around us. Ecological relationships between soil, water, air, plants and animals are fundamentally chemical.
Chemists can work with everything from ecological issues to the design of new bioactive compounds that could become the drugs of the future.Chemists can also develop new compounds for use in, for example, nanotechnology or electronics.
An education in chemistry can, among other things, get you a job with research and development work or advanced analysis work in both the private and public sectors. Chemistry is also an important part of science teacher education for work in both primary and secondary schools.
Courses in chemistry are given at Mid Sweden University's campus in Sundsvall and to some extent also at a distance. Mid Sweden University also offers doctoral education in chemistry, where we currently run projects in organic, physical and analytical chemistry. Among other things, we work with the synthesis of pheromones, which are the biological substances that control mating behavior in insects. In the long term, the results can lead to environmentally friendly ways to limit infestations of insect pests on forests. We also develop analytical methods to understand how trees absorb mineral nutrients. This is important for how sustainable forestry is to be conducted.
Additional courses at both undergraduate and advanced level as well as the opportunity to do independent projects within our research areas may be offered, mainly within the framework of "Master by research".
