Economics
Economics offers an exciting way to understand how society works from different perspectives. The subject covers everything from the situation of the individual and the family to the functioning of the international economy.
Economics as a science studies the choice between different goods and services. Starting from society's scarcity of resources and the wishes of households, the economist tries to explain how the economic system produces goods and services that respond to these desires.
One branch of economics, microtheory, studies how the problem of housekeeping is solved in a market economy system. How do households and companies choose what they buy, sell, produce, save and invest, and how much they work? How are prices and wages determined by competition in the markets?
The second branch, macro theory, attempts to explain how the economy as a whole develops: economic growth, business cycles, unemployment, inflation, exchange rates, interest rates, current account balances and government finances. In addition, the possibilities of influencing economic development through monetary and fiscal policy are studied.
In addition to these central modules, various modules deal with stabilisation policy, structural and growth problems, financial economics and relations in the international economy.
Studies in economics are characterised by a strong methodological element. Particular emphasis is placed on quantitative methods through a course in econometrics. The emphasis on method gives you the ability to independently and critically analyze many different economic problems based on available material.
Mid Sweden University offers courses at undergraduate level (A, B and C). Economics can be the main field of study for a bachelor's degree at Mid Sweden University. Economics can also be included as a supplementary subject to a degree in another main field of study. The subject can also be studied in extension courses, where students get an elementary introduction to economic theories by studying various social phenomena. These extension courses do not qualify for progression within the subject. Some courses are taught in English.
