Sociology
Sociology as a science is about understanding and explaining the way society works. This means that the task of sociology is to investigate and reflect on the state, development and change of various social phenomena.
Sociology provides a holistic perspective on society and analyses how individuals, groups, organisations and institutions influence each other and have an impact on society as a whole. The subject has been developed in a number of areas, such as organizational sociology, sociology of work, social psychology, family sociology, welfare and social policy, environmental and risk sociology, and gender research.
The holistic perspective in the subject of sociology means that other social science subjects have been influenced by sociology in their own subject development. This is one of the reasons why many students in other subjects supplement their studies with sociology. When it comes to social science methods, sociology has made a significant contribution to their development. Within the subject there is good knowledge of how different social science phenomena can be investigated and analysed from both qualitative and quantitative points of view.
Sociologists work in several sectors of society and sociologists are employed, for example, as managers in both private and public organizations or as human resources managers, organizational analysts, market researchers, evaluators, and consultants.
Sociology can be studied at both undergraduate and advanced level and be included as a main field of study or as a supplementary subject in bachelor's and master's programmes. At undergraduate level (A), in addition to the subject's basic courses, there are also a number of so-called extension courses, the purpose of which is to provide specialisation or specialisation in certain areas of sociology. These courses do not qualify for the next level in the subject. At Mid Sweden University, education and research are conducted primarily in leadership, organizations, risks and the welfare state.
