Statistics
With statistics, you create order out of chaos by collecting facts and data for analysis and interpretation. The results then form the basis for large and small decisions in both the private and public sectors.
Since today's amount of information is so large, technical aids in the form of various software are also needed to succeed. And, not least, the right knowledge to be able to take on the task.
With information technology (IT), large volumes of facts can be quickly made available to decision-makers as well as other interested parties. In order to be able to analyse and interpret the collected material correctly, you must have the ability to assess the quality of the data and how relevant it is to the problems being studied.
As the availability of statistical data has increased, more and more advanced analytics, calculation and presentation software has also appeared on the market. This, in turn, requires that you as a user have the skills needed to use these aids in the right way. Otherwise, there is a risk that the result will be an unmanageably large amount of information and ultimately hasty and erroneous conclusions. In such cases, statistical tools can do more harm than good.
Many of the students who are currently educated at universities and colleges often become involved in the production of statistical data later in their professional lives. Practically all government agencies and enterprises play an important role as data providers for various producers of statistics in the state, municipal and private sectors. In addition, most government agencies and companies have extensive internal production and analysis of statistical data, which of course requires statistical expertise.
As a statistician, you can therefore choose to work in a variety of activities, ranging from economic forecasts and opinion polls to quality checks. For those who go on to research in a subject other than statistics, statistical methods will always be an important task.
Mid Sweden University provides a modern education in statistics, focused on the use of relevant methods and effective techniques in the subject area. The courses in statistics are given at Mid Sweden University's campuses in Sundsvall and Östersund and as distance education.
