Historia GR (A), Ett rike som brinner: Det engelska inbördeskriget 1642-1649, 7,5 hp
In 1642, one of the bloodiest wars fought on the British Isles began: the English Civil War. Divided into two sides – the royalist Cavaliers and the parliamentarian Roundheads – the British Isles became ‘a Kingdome burning’. However, the civil war ended with a more significant division: in January 1649, Charles I’s head was cut from his shoulders. England committed regicide and saw thereafter the rise of Oliver Cromwell’s reign.
This course focuses on the period of 1642–49, known as the ‘English Civil War’. It will consider the causes, events, experiences, and the significance of the war. It considers multiple aspects of seventeenth century life: religion, society, war and politics. The study of the English Civil War reveals the dynamic early modern world, whilst also establishing an understanding how our contemporary democratic world came to be.
