Syfte
The aim of this course is to offer doctoral candidates the opportunity of developing their competences in writing academic texts in English in order to facilitate output in international peer-reviewed journals. In addition to developing knowledge and an understanding of writing and publishing within different disciplines, doctoral candidates will be expected to identify academic standards within their own areas of specialization and to engage in different writing forms that satisfy these requirements.
Lärandemål
This course is designed to suit the needs of doctoral candidates conducting research in the social sciences. After completing the course, doctoral candidates should demonstrate:?
- basic skills and abilities needed to present research confidently in writing and in dialogue with the international academic community;
- understanding of academic standards and ethical issues within their own areas of specialization;?
- familiarity with different forms of review and publication processes;
- knowledge of bibliometric aspects of publishing.
Innehåll
The course focuses on the preparation and writing of an academic text. Detailed emphasis will be given to articulating a problem clearly, synthesizing main points of an argument, and techniques for writing. As an aid to their own writing in progress, the doctoral candidates will be required to critically analyze selected scientific articles as well as each other’s texts, based on academic criteria. Course content is based on three main components: the writing process, the review process and the publishing process.

Undervisning
The course is given in English. It draws on the analysis of research articles published in specified target journals and guides the participants in the writing process of their own article for publication. Teaching methods and materials are adapted to the needs of individual course participants. Throughout the duration of the course the doctoral candidates will be required to critically analyze and discuss their own as well as other participants’ work in progress. To facilitate this process, they will work in writing/dialogue teams. Working forms include lectures, seminars, group discussions and peer-coaching.
Examination
The final evaluation is based on the assessment of the article draft, completion of all preparation tasks, and participation in the seminars.

Övrig information
Each doctoral candidate should be in their writing phase and will be required to work with an individual (work-in-progress) manuscript throughout the duration of the course.
At the end of the course there will be an individual written course evaluation.
